I've also found it ironic how our country is supposed to exercise separation of church and state, yet the dominant sects of American Christianity constantly provide stances on political issues and politicians' stances. I guess that's not really too surprising, but it does bother me that they do it so shamelessly.

Although I am not a catholic, I am forced to go to church every sunday. whenever there is something to vote on concerning "moral" issues such as abortion, immigration, gay marrage and ect. there is a flyer in the church news packet given to all catholic churches as decided Mahoney. Being very bored in church, I always read these and I feel like you do about the church saying catholics have to vote one way. A few times after a "moral" ellection went against the church, the priest would give a homily on it saying there are this many people supporting the catholic church and only a small percentage voted the way the church wanted the people to vote. So the priest says it is our duty to vote as the church wants if we ever want to live in a "moral" society.

Hey Elisa! I definitely see, and agree, with your opinion here. I'm not Catholic, as you know, and I definitely don't agree with what the Catholic church is saying about how you will be eternally damned if you vote for a certain candidate. But the thing is, is that I don't just disagree with it because its the Catholic church who's saying this, but because the entire premise is just downright wrong. I would even be upset if the Lutheran churches got together and decided something like this. I really don't think that any church has the right to tell its members what they can and can't do in an election, and then bribe them with salvation. But then again, that was the whole reason that Luther seperated from the Catholic church in the first place, so I guess its a pretty good thing that I'm Lutheran.

I am Catholic. I do feel that the Church is overextending itself here. Separation between church and state is only possible to a certain degree. There is no need for priests and bishops to try to influence people's vote. Dont think people should criticize. Only doing what they feel God would want them to. WWJD.

I don't even want to get into all my problems with the Catholic Church because I could go on forever about how messed up it is (no offense to Catholics-it's the way the religion is run). A lot of organized religion is messed up for this very reason. They want to govern people's lives and choices. People who are fundamentalists often don't really think about how they really feel on the issues, but instead look at the Bible. They use the Bible as their "voting guide" instead of using their personal beliefs. I consider myself to be a person of faith, and my faith does play a role in my political beliefs, but I do not let a religious leader dictate how I will act or believe.
